At monthly SERI Talks events, a growing group of social entrepreneurs, funders and policy makers and supportive professionals meets to discuss relevant topics, hear from speakers and network. The casual sessions are a great way to connect to Rhode Island’s comprehensive social enterprise community, get updated on new programs and opportunities and meet others in the social enterprise space.

This session, the first of two, will explain what social enterprise is, describe some different types of businesses that nonprofits are launching, and present several case studies that outline the steps that organizations have taken to launch and grow their businesses. Finally, we will talk About what you need to consider if you would like to launch a mission-related business and provide you with some tools to help you decide whether some of your business ideas are feasible and a good fit with your organization.

The second session will provide an overview of legal structure options and reported ramifications of each structure. It will help you understand the skills and tools needed to launch and grow a social enterprise and talk about how to access these needed resources. Finally, it will present information about the capital needs associated with starting a mission-related business and present the current landscape of financial resources that exist for these types of endeavors.
