Rhode Island’s Ashoka Fellows

Amy Barzach, Boundless Playgrounds – Barrington & Providence

Amy is assisting people in the creation of barrier-free, developmentally advantageous playgrounds, thereby challenging cultural stereotypes and current practices that exclude children with disabilities from public play spaces and creating environments where children of all abilities can have the best opportunities for healthy development

Edgar Cahn, TimeBanks/CareBanks USA – West Greenwich RI

What if the value of shopping for a sick neighbor, checking in on an isolated elder, or joining a neighborhood watch group could be “deposited” and “withdrawn” when citizens needed help? Edgar Cahn offers a way to combine monetary and service credits so that informal social care networks can grow and flourish across the country.

Gerald Chertavian, Year Up – Providence

Gerald Chertavian is redefining how talent is perceived in the United States by solving America’s growing skills gap while providing employment opportunities for disconnected 18 to 24-year-olds. Year Up creates a new pathway for potentially millions of marginalized citizens to become initiative-takers and contributors to growth in America’s businesses and society.

Rebecca Onie, Project HEALTH – Providence

Rebecca Onie is building a movement to break the link between poverty and poor health by mobilizing undergraduate volunteers to provide sustained public health interventions in partnership with urban medical centers, universities, and community organizations.
